Mikaela Shiffrin won her first Slalom World Championship at the age of 17. When she was 19, she became the youngest Olympic gold medal winner in the history of the sport.
Keep Calm and Word Search On
As part of her pre-race routine, Shiffrin does a word search puzzle. “I find word searches to be calming,” Shiffrin told the Wall Street Journal. Staying calm is incredibly important while hurtling down a mountain at speeds in excess of 50 mph.
Shiffrin explained a family tradition in an interview with Colorado Public Radio: “normally I race my mom, actually, so we have two of the same word search puzzles and we can’t look at each other’s, and we basically set the clock and see who can finish first. I don’t know why — it was something my family always did when we got together for, like, Thanksgiving.”
